“Nonsense, there’s always room for a hot dog!”

“He doesn’t eat meat anymore,” my mom slurred, clearly tipsy from the wine. “He’s a vegetarian,” elongating the word vegetarian as if she were saying it to someone who had never heard the word before.

You know those moments in movies when the music at a loud party stops on a dime, leading everyone in attendance to zero in on a single conversation? I always thought they were played-out but there is simply no better way to describe what transpired at that moment. I’m not saying that the terribly loud country music playing out of my Uncle Andy’s speakers actually stopped, but it sure did seem like everyone within a ten-foot radius heard the word vegetarian and turned their heads to see who let the freak into the party. At that moment, if I’d had one wish it would’ve been for Budweiser Breath to loudly resume the story that moments ago I wanted so desperately to end. Half of that wish came true. Budweiser Breath did speak up, but unfortunately he didn’t miss my mom’s declaration that a vegetarian was on the premises.

“A vegetarian? What’s the matter with you, boy? Don’t you know that meat puts hair on your chest!”
